GEORGE TOWN: Almost twice the usual number of participants took part in this year’s Chingay parade here, marking a great return of the event touted as among the biggest street processions within the Unesco World Heritage Site.

The procession of flag bearers, lion and dragon dancers, trishaws and floats stretched over 500m as it wended its way through the city.

“We are thankful for the support from all the groups in making a comeback,” said Ooi during the procession on Saturday. The procession saw roads such as Jalan Dato Keramat, Jalan Burma, Jalan Transfer, Jalan Sri Bahari, Jalan Penang, Lebuh Chulia, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Lebuh Farquhar and Lebuh Light closed to traffic.

In his speech, Chow said as a multiracial state, Penang was very lucky to be able to celebrate various festivals, proving that it was not only rich in natural treasures but also in culture and art.
