Compared to many runners, Derrick has been blessed with healthy bones, he said. While he has suffered tendon and ligament issues in the past, this injury is only the second time he’s fractured a bone. The first time was when he broke his nose after tripping up a flight of stairs in the library as a kid. “That one was more embarrassing,” he said.—and having supportive teammates and coaches—is what keeps Derrick motivated even during the most challenging parts of his recovery.
