Chris Selley: The TVA debate was a good show ... if you could find it
As French-language debates go — which is to say as Quebec-specific debates go — Wednesday night’s affair, hosted by TVA, wasn’t bad.
The headlines Thursday morning were about Conservative leader Andrew Scheer refusing to bare his soul on abortion and same-sex marriage. And they were about Scheer’s grinning revelation that the Liberals have actually deployed two jet aircraft in the service of Justin Trudeau’s re-election. And rightly so, because that’s just bizarre: There’s either a climate crisis on or there isn’t.
But in between the fireworks the leaders staked out important, independent turf on assisted dying — an issue that could easily roar back to life once this election is over and done with. A Quebec Superior Court judge quashed the Liberals’ law last month, ruling that stipulations a patient’s death must be “reasonably foreseeable” and that he must “be at the end of life” are unconstitutional. And progressive Canadian politicians — not least Liberals — are used to taking their cues from the courts.
On Lavalin, meanwhile, it was Singh who came out looking reasonable. The company is a “jewel,” Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet thundered, hilariously, and Quebec’s precious jewel “is being destroyed,” and all thanks to Justin Trudeau’s bumbling incompetence!
