CHRISTCHURCH MOSQUE SHOOTING: 40 dead, 20 injured in 'terrorist attack', says New Zealand PM
CHRISTCHURCH: Forty people died and 20 others were seriously injured after gunmen opened fire at two mosques in the city of Christchurch during afternoon prayers on Friday , New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has confirmed.
"We stand here and condemn, absolutely the attack that occurred today by an extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist," Morrison told a press conference. Local media had earlier reported up to six people were dead and the South Island city was placed in lockdown as police hunted for an"active shooter."Police also requested all mosques in the country to"shut their doors" and advised that"people refrain from visiting the premises until further notice".
Police did not immediately comment on whether the incident took place in the mosque or nearby. There is no official confirmation on casualties. Six Indonesians were praying at one of the mosques when the gunman opened fire, Indonesia's foreign ministry said. Three of them were able to escape, but the whereabouts of the other three remain unknown, Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi was cited as saying in The Jakarta Post.as"one of New Zealand’s darkest days".
Media said shots had been fired near a mosque and a witness told broadcaster One News that he had seen three people lying on the ground, bleeding outside the building.
