Christian Bérard, the artist who helped shape fashion history, is finally gets his due in a new exhibition in Monaco

Yes, there is a cult of Bérard, but it seems to exist on the fringe or outside of traditional art histories. Righting that discrepancy was the job that curator Célia Bernasconi set for herself at the, which has the largest collection of the artist’s work, much of which once belonged to Kochno.

Bernasconi did away with such genre hierarchies, combining painting, drawings, decor, and costumes in the new exhibition. Taking a page from Bérard’s book, she worked collaboratively with the Bérardophiles Jacques Grange, who created the mise-en-scène, and artist Nick Mauss, who contributed original on-site installations.

The Mediterranean is the theme of the third floor and is the subject most in sync with the locale of Villa Paloma, through whose windows one sees only endless expanses of blue sea and sky. Bérard’s partner Kochno was the director of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, with whom Bérard worked, and they both spent a lot of time on the Côte d’Azur. In Bérard’s work, the sea is a stand-in for Western and European civilization.
