The department partnered with Southwestern College to engrave two times more catalytic converters than at previous events.

The Chula Vista Police Department partnered with Southwestern College on Saturday to engrave 104 catalytic converters in an effort to deter thieves.two times more catalytic converters than at previous eventsThe goal is to make the car part harder to sell by engraving it with a vehicle identification number and then highlighting the digits with neon paint, said Chula Vista police Sgt. Anthony Molina. That way, the part can be tracked back to the car it came from.

Catalytic converter theft has increased across the nation, and it continues to trend upward in San Diego County. For instance, in 2018 Molina said Chula Vista had one reported catalytic converter theft. But since then, it’s spiked to more than 100 thefts each year. Thieves are after what’s inside of catalytic converters — platinum, rhodium, and palladium, rare earth metals that are more valuable than gold, according to the nonprofit. Stolen catalytic converters are then sold for hundreds of dollars to scrapyards or recycling centers where they can be melted to extract the metals.

Molina said that even if people aren’t able to come to one of the “Engrave and Save” events, they can ask their mechanic for help or do it themselves to combat this crime.
