This is not the first time Cumberland County has faced a class-action lawsuit over jail strip searches.

A lawsuit in which four former prisoners at Cumberland County Jail allege they were illegally strip searched may proceed as a class-action lawsuit, a state Superior Court judge has ruled.

Jamar Parrish, Darius Snead, Samuel Rosado and William Garrison sued in 2020 alleging they were unlawfully strip searched at the jail after they were arrested separately on non-indictable charges. They claim the jail staff had no reasonable suspicion that any of them were hiding contraband, but all were directed to undress in front of corrections officers.

The class action covers the time period of May 13, 2018, through the present and an evaluation of court data on prisoners placed in the facility on non-indictable charges during that period found that 3,974 additional prisoners may have been unlawfully searched, according to a 2021 filing by the plaintiffs’ attorneys.
