Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot is a finalist for the PFWA's Bill Nunn Jr. Award.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Mary Kay Cabot has seen a lot since joining the Browns beat nearly four decades ago for The Plain Dealer. Now she’s being recognized for all those coaches, quarterbacks, team owners -- and even a franchise rebirth -- whose stories she has told.
Voted the 2015 Ohio Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, her coverage of the Browns dates back to Bill Belichick’s tenure as head coach, an era on the beat that was certainly memorable, including one of just two playoff wins during her time covering the team.
“It’s a tremendous honor to be nominated for this prestigious award,” Cabot said. “I’m humbled to be mentioned in the same breath with such distinguished and accomplished journalists as Jarrett Bell, Gary Myers, and Barry Wilner, and I wish all of them the best of luck.” During that time, she has broken too many stories to count, including Ray Farmer sending texts to the sideline during games. She also broke the story that former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan wanted out of Cleveland and delivered a now infamous PowerPoint presentation.
