Peter Billingsley spoke to Cleveland media about his time in Cleveland filming the iconic 1983 movie, “A Christmas Story.” He and other cast members are set to return in a few weeks for an expo to commemorate the film’s 40th anniversary. He spoke on a Zoom interview Thursday.CLEVELAND, Ohio – Next month, Ralphie is coming back to Cleveland. But he won’t need an official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot range model air rifle.

He also remembered it was really cold, but there wasn’t much snow. That posed a challenge for director Bob Clark. So local fire departments brought a fire-deterrent foam substance, clearly visible in many of the scenes outside of the Parker home on Cleveland Street, Billingsley said. For the opening sequence of a vibrant downtown near Higbee’s – one of Billingsley’s favorite memories of the filming - Clark called car clubs. He needed old cars – classic, expensive and hard to get. And it was cold. They came together, as did city and state officials, extras and other supporters.

“I saw a standee - a cardboard cutout - of me,” he said. “I was, ‘What is this?’ I went up to the video guy – ‘This was a movie I did almost 10 years ago.’Looking back, it’s more than the film’s cult status that Billingsley remembers. Clark, he said, “was the greatest mentor I had.” It’s not the only artifact he has from the film. Fortunately, Billingsley said, his mom was good about gathering mementos. He has the original bunny suit and BB gun locked in a vault. He also owns the cowboy suit Ralphie wore in one of the film’s creative dream sequences.
