The group of elected town leaders held a press conference in Teaneck on Friday reiterating their demands to the White House.

“As mayors who value transparency and the U.S. legal system of due process, we urge you to provide Mayor Khairullah with substantive reasons as to why he was denied admission. We also ask you to issue a formal apology to Mayor Khairullah, initiate a review of his status on the watchlist, and to extend another invitation to him to meet with President Biden to proudly represent his constituents,” the letter reads.
Councilman Anand Shah also introduced a resolution adopted by the borough council on Monday backing Khairullah and opposing the watchlist. Moments before he was set to arrive at the White House for its annual Eid al-Fitr event on May 1, Khairullah received a call from a man from the White House Social Office, he said. The man said Khairullah — who is also— had not been cleared for entry and his invitation to the White House Eid celebration was revoked, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which describes its mission as protecting the civil rights of American Muslims.
