A Michigan man described as an “avid golfer” has been arrested in connection with two decades-old sexual assault cases that occurred on golf courses in different states, after he was finally identified using genetic genealogy technology.
The testing results pointed investigators to three brothers as possible persons of interest and DNA from a coffee cup ultimately led to Rillema's arrest. The first assault took place on Sept. 6, 1999, at the Twin Lakes Golf Club in Oakland Township, Bouchard said. In 2004, the Oakland Township Sheriff’s Office learned that CODIS matched the DNA profile of the 1999 assault to that of the 2000 assault.
The genealogical research process took 7 months and one of those three brothers appeared to be the most"viable suspect," based on his age and physical features as described by the victims, Sean McGraw, the Centre County First Assistant District Attorney in Pennsylvania, said in a press conference last week.Authorities in Michigan began conducting surveillance on Rillema and obtained a “discarded coffee cup” that he used on Jan.
