Cold temps ease flooding risk in Utah — for now

There’s a 40% chance of snow showers on Wednesday night, and a 50% chance of more snow on Thursday. Accumulations of 1-2 inches are possible in some areas.

On Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service canceled its flood advisory for Emigration Creek. The forecast for the water flow in the creek is well below both “flood” stage and “action” stage and trending down. A peak of 90 cfs is expected on Wednesday, dropping into the 80s, 70s and 60s for the next week.

That’s because cold temperatures are slowing the melting of Utah’s record snowpack. In the Salt Lake City area, high temperatures in the low to mid-40s are expected on Wednesday and Thursday; the upper 40s and low 50s on Friday and Saturday; and the upper 50s to low 60s on Sunday and Monday.Overnight lows in the 30s are also expected, falling into the 20s in some areas. Normal low temperatures for this time of year are 42-43 degrees.

The danger of flooding around the state has not passed, however. As of Tuesday, just 10% of the state’s snow water equivalent had melted,
