San Diego State welcomes one of college baseball’s most storied programs to town this weekend when Arizona State comes in for a three-game series at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
“It’s a great opportunity to manage a series against a really good program,” SDSU head coach Mark Martinez said. “It means a lot to our program to get a program like ASU to come to San Diego State. It’s a big step in the right direction.“Pac-12 school. Three-game series rather than a one-off. All that stuff is leaning positively, so that’s why they’re on the schedule.
This is the final tuneup for SDSU before opening Mountain West play next week against UNLV. Both the Aztecs and ASU come into the series amid some recent struggles. “We’re both reeling,” Martinez said. “We’ve lost some heartbreaking games. We’re in a situation where our losses have been close. They’ve arrived a little bit differently — given up some big leads, failed at the back ends of games. So I think they’re going to retool what they’ve done on the mound. ...
The Patriots are coming off Tuesday’s 4-3, 10-inning loss against Texas Tech, which followed a three-game sweep of Sam Houston last weekend.
