Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez said Sunday the suspect entered the nightclub and immediately fired shots from a long rifle before “at least two heroic people” confronted him and stopped him from hurting others. Police were called to Club Q, described by Vasquez as “a safe haven” for the LGBTQ community, at 11:56 p.m. Saturday, and Aldrich was taken into custody approximately six minutes later, police said, noting two firearms were found at the scene.
Police have not released any information on a suspected motive, but the shooting is being investigated under the “lens” of a hate crime, 4th Judicial District Attorney Michael Allen said, though he didn’t specify whether the suspect will be charged under Colorado’s hate crimes statute.
