It’s a journey that eventually took Angela McGowan to the popular ancestry testing website 23andMe, where she hoped to connect with distant relatives who might eventually shed light on the man who “I always felt in my heart was not a horrible person.”

Angela McGowan with her birth father Tim Mackey on the day they met in March.

What makes their story so remarkable is that not only had 34-year-old McGowan been searching for her birth father her entire adult life, she never stopped believing she would someday find him, even after being told he was a “bad guy” and that he’d died years ago, she said.

It’s a journey that eventually took Angela McGowan to the popular ancestry testing website 23andMe, where she hoped to connect with distant relatives who might eventually shed light on this mystery man who “I always felt in my heart was not a horrible person.” The following afternoon, Tim Mackey – an engineer who had joined 23andMe a few months earlier to learn more about his medical history - was at her front door with a bouquet of pink and white flowers and a sign that declared IT’S A GIRL!

Turns out, far from a one-night encounter, as teenagers her birth parents were involved in a one-year serious relationship, a story backed up by love letters Tim Mackey had kept even all these years later.Which explains why the then 19-year-old was “so shocked, so hurt” when, that evening in 1988, he showed up for a date with his 17-year-old girlfriend and her angry dad met him at the front door, he said.
