The new-fashioned City Council, which lost veteran aldermen and women over the last few years to retirements and defeats at the polls, has been careening all over the place of late. Usually in the wrong direction.

This while the city’s complacent electorate has watched from the sidelines. They must wonder what’s at work in the background as mainly male council members seek to weaken a first-term mayor who happens to be female.

Waukegan officials also have hinted the city will sponsor a single parade. Again, that may not please anyone. Others drone on at City Council meetings. Don’t forget that futile city manager dance the council dipped into. Jaded folks may note that in the end of the fuss over salaries, five men voted to take power away from a woman mayor. The three women on the council voted with the mayor’s position that salary increases are spelled out in the city’s annual budget which aldermen approve.
