Five-time Silver Slugger winner offers glimpse into how he remains one of the best hitters in baseball
Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts recorded two hits, one a two-run home run, on April 11 against the Mets. Two nights later, he added two more hits against the Brewers. Two nights after that, he finished 3-for-4 against the same team. Two more nights? Two more hits, this time against the Braves.
“I haven’t been feeling like myself,” Bogaerts said after turning in another multi-hit game, including his fifth homer, Thursday in a 7-5 series-opening win at Chase Field. “I haven’t been feeling really good at the plate. My head. The way my body was moving. Just trying to get everything in synch.” He came in early to study video. He carved out extra time in the batting cage to dial things in. He became his most punitive pundit. Wonder why Bogaerts continues to hit and hit and hit?
“He’s covering every single spot,” Cronenworth said. “He can hit a fastball up. He can hit a breaking ball down. He can hit a slider away. He can hit something in. Even if he’s not doing that, he’s finding a way to get on base with a walk or busting it down the line and forcing a bad throw or whatever it might be.
