Schaefer, the largest greenhouse in the Fox Valley, is left to not only clean up a huge mess but also reorder plants that need time to grow for the company’s busiest time of year, writes Denise Crosby.

Broken glass from a recent hailstorm is strewn inside a building at Schaefer Greenhouses in Montgomery.I was nearing the end of an extensive interview in downtown Aurora when someone entered the room warning that “golf ball-sized hail” was suddenly raining on our parked cars. Which led to a quick end of this gathering and eventual gratitude the hail, which only lasted a short time, did not seem to have caused much damage.

“Right now we are in the process of getting glass repaired so we can move products back in greenhouses,” said co-owner Mary Ann Kutnick. “Every day has been a process trying to reorder products and replant them and get them greenhouse-ready.” Within seconds, things changed, as the large, hard hail began “coming down fast and furious,” pummeling the staff, damaging vehicles and hitting every greenhouse.Who would have guessed, the Schaefer Facebook post asked, there could be so much destruction within five minutes. Cleanup and recovery will take weeks, say the owners, who breathed a collective sigh of relief on Wednesday when another storm that brought large hail to some local communities rolled safely past them.
