Here's everything you need to know about comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, from when to see it to where to find it in the night sky come September and October.It's a long-period comet that was discovered in January 2023 by astronomers at South Africa’s Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System telescope and China’s Tsuchinshan Observatory.
Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS will reach its perihelion—the closest it will get to the sun—on September 27. That's when it should reach its brightest. However, comets are famously hard to predict. Although it's expected to become visible to the naked eye, it could brighten significantly or fade to nothing.
However, those in the northern hemisphere will likely have their best chance in post-sunset skies around October 12, by which time it will be closest to Earth at about 44 million miles) having rounded the sun and be its way out of the inner solar system. It will be in the constellation Ophiuchus above the west.
