Proposed legislation is anti-immigrant and cuts against Christian beliefs and principles.

authored by state Rep. Ryan Guillen, R-Rio Grande City. House Bill 7 would fund several border and border-security initiatives. House Bill 800 would increase the criminal penalties for certain criminal conduct involving the smuggling of persons, the operation of a stash house, or evading an arrest or detention.

While Scripture calls us to welcome and aid the stranger and the immigrant, these bills could result in widespread discrimination, not only against immigrants but also against American citizens and legal residents whose skin color, accent or language are perceived as “foreign.” While Scripture commands us to not bear false witness against our neighbors, House Bill 20 would have criminalized and imprisoned immigrants as trespassers and terrorists. It could have caused the arrest and prosecution of Christian congregations, church mission groups and Christian aid agencies providing food, clothing or shelter.
