A significant announcement followed, outlining revised salary guidelines for the 23,000 employees working within community care organizations. These guidelines, slated for implementation by the end of 2026, anticipate an annual salary increase of approximately 7% or more for these crucial healthcare professionals.
To support the community care organizations in absorbing the financial implications of these enhanced salaries, the Ministry of Health (MOH) will allocate an initial tranche of $100 million. This financial commitment is designed to ensure the sustainability of the salary adjustments and reflects the government's dedication to supporting the healthcare sector. The announcement of the salary increase comes on the heels of previous measures aimed at improving healthcare worker compensation, including the previously announced increase in the maximum subsidy for residential long-term care. This subsidy, available for those requiring such care, will increase to 80% for Singapore citizens by July 2026, and a smaller increase for permanent residents. This comprehensive approach underscores the government's commitment to both healthcare workforce and those receiving care.\Details regarding the revised salary guidelines are expected to be released in the coming months. Following the release of these guidelines, community care organizations will be required to develop and implement plans for their execution, ensuring compliance by the end of 2026. This move is particularly important given the growing demand for healthcare services and the need to attract and retain skilled professionals in the field. This measure builds upon an earlier increase in public sector healthcare professionals' base salaries, which saw an increase of up to 7% starting July 2025. Community care organizations play a pivotal role in providing intermediate and long-term services for patients discharged from general hospitals, in addition to other services such as home-based nursing and daycare for seniors. In 2024, the MOH had published salary guidelines for these organizations as part of efforts to improve transparency in the sector. The Healthcare Services Employees' Union (HSEU) actively collaborated with the MOH to ensure appropriate salary adjustments for the community care sector. HSEU President K Thanaletchimi recognized the shared responsibility in providing excellent care to patients, regardless of the care setting. The union has been a strong advocate for better recognition and compensation in the community care sector, aiming to address the salary gap between it and the acute care sector.\During his visits, Minister Ong engaged with both patients and staff, distributing oranges and participating in a Lohei session at both hospitals as part of Chinese New Year festivities. At Alexandra Hospital, he had the opportunity to observe technologies deployed in two wards as part of a trial. Remote monitoring cameras and wearable devices are used to provide virtual patient monitoring. Additionally, the Minister was briefed on the hospital's redevelopment plans, with the revamped hospital scheduled to reopen progressively from 2028, while essential hospital services continue to operate throughout the construction. In preparation for the redevelopment, the hospital plans to incrementally scale up its services and operations, allowing teams to revise workflows and optimize clinical processes during the expansion phase. This comprehensive approach, encompassing both financial support and technological advancements, demonstrates a multi-faceted strategy to improve the healthcare sector in Singapore.
