The UK's new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is closing down Parliament to prevent opponents derailing his Government's hardline Brexit strategy.
LONDON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 28: A protester holds a painting as people gather outside of the gates at Downing Street on August 28, 2019 in London, United Kingdom. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has written to Cabinet colleagues telling them that his government has requested the Queen suspend parliament for longer than the usual conference season. Parliament will return for a new session with a Queen's Speech on 14 October 2019.
And no, the Queen could not refuse the Prime Minister’s request to close down Parliament. Johnson’s action has already compromised her political neutrality, essential to the functioning of Britain’s constitutional monarchy. Defying him would spark a constitutional crisis that could bring about the end of the monarchy.
However it is dressed up, it is blindingly obvious that the purpose of prorogation now would be to stop Parliament debating Brexit and performing its duty in shaping a course for the country. At this time, one of the most challenging periods in our nation’s history, it is vital that our elected Parliament has its say. After all, we live in a parliamentary democracy.
Meanwhile, others are already staking out their positions. A cross-party group of MPs, including the leaders of both the opposition Labour party and the renascent Liberal Democrats, has, effectively bypassing the prorogation. It is not clear what authority such a group would have. No doubt the Speaker will express his view on this in due course.
