After multiple seasons, the renovations at the 'GARS' intersection is coming to a close in August.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - With work beginning in 2022, the intersection between Gaffney Road, Airport Way, the Richardson Highway, and the Steese Expressway also known as the “GARS” intersection, is finally nearing completion.
The intersection’s current design has been a cause of large traffic build ups and impatient drivers. Due to the long wait times, some drivers have attempted to sneak in last minute left turns, some of those attempts leading to accidents. “As a result of all those accidents, GARS has the second most accidents of any intersection in the interior,” Perreault said. To reduce that problem, the DOT separated the left turn lanes from the rest of traffic.
With the work nearing completion, drivers can see the new turn lanes, medians and more. Looking to punch in the final bit of work, the DOT will be closing the intersection from Aug. 5, to Aug. 14. During that time, the street lights and signage will be put in place and the final configurations will be made.
