New digital information signs will provide air quality information to the Fairbanks area.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Digital signs will be placed in two locations in the Fairbanks area to help combat poor air quality caused by PM 2.5 emissions.
As the community continues to battle poor air quality, especially in the winter, the Department of Transportation is getting involved by providing drivers with information about the daily air quality. “At Richardson Highway mile 358 and at the Mitchell between Geist Road and the Chena River, we’re installing digital message signs that are part of a congestion mitigation and air quality improvement program,” said John Perreault, a public information officer with the DOT.
This information can be used to help travelers decide whether or not to use their own vehicles, ride a bike, take public transit or stay at home if possible. “This program is being constructed as a part of F.A.S.T. plannings PM 2.5 improvement program,” said Perreault. F.A.S.T. planning is a group within the Fairbanks community that works to improve transportation for the Fairbanks area. Their full title is Fairbanks Area Surface Transportation planning.
The clean air act was passed in 1970, providing the Environmental Protection Agency the authority to regulate air quality standards. Due to the harsh climate in the last frontier, this can be challenging as vehicular exhaust is often trapped in the air during the cold winter months. “These are part of an arsenal of tools that we’re using to help people make good decisions around working together as a community to improve our air quality,” Perreault said.
