WATCH: For years, an Australian-owned coal company has had its eye on an open pit mining site in Alberta’s Crowsnest Pass . Multiple applications were denied by the province and energy regulator, who deemed the project to be an environmental risk. But a recent drilling exploration program application by Northback Holdings is under review. Jordan Prentice toured the Grassy Mountain site.Northback Holdings’ Grassy Mountain coal mining project has been a controversial topic in Alberta for years.

But some southern Alberta landowners are suspicious of these promises, and don’t want their land touched. “We need to protect the eastern slopes, and the resource they provide, which is water, vegetation, native grasslands, tourism, guiding, outfitting, and recreation. You can have all of those things, but you can’t have all of those things and coal.”
