The white work van drove away after hitting a 14-year-old bicyclist on Friday, officials said.
Authorities arrested and charged Michael Arena, 63, of South River, with aggravated manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
South River police officers responded to the intersection of Whitehead and Russell Avenues for a report of a collision, authorities said. Officers found the victim, a 14-year-old boy, who was struck by a white work van while riding his bicycle, according to the prosecutor’s office. The van fled the scene, officials said. First responders transported the boy to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries, authorities said.
Officers took Arena into custody for questioning on Friday, according to the prosecutor’s office. Arena admitted to driving the van at the time of the crash, officials said. He is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending the results of a pre-trial detention hearing, authorities said.
