Locals thought the man had a long gun, but police say he didn't.

Authorities have determined there was no actual threat hours after Summit public schools went into a shelter in place Wednesday afternoon when police were alerted to a man dressed in camouflage who passersby thought was carrying a long gun near district schools.

At 12:30 p.m. police received a report from someone driving along Summit Avenue that they saw a man in camouflage with a bag over his shoulder and what the person thought was a long gun sticking out the back of the bag, a joint release from the Summit Police Department and Summit Public Schools announced. Lawton C. Johnson Middle School was immediately notified about the report and went into a lock down that eventually evolved into a shelter-in-place until dismissal.

Area private schools and houses of worship, as well as the free public library were notified about the report as well. Police posted an image and video of the alleged suspect on their Facebook page. Video was obtained from security cameras at the Latin Bistro at 25 Summit Ave, police said.
