Council finalized renaming John A. Macdonald Road, approved a new fee model for garbage collection, and approved CO alarm enforcement.
Speaking in favour of the bylaw, Ward 7 Coun,. Mairin Loewen argued that street names are not where Canadians learn their history, suggesting there is “zero risk” Macdonald will be forgotten as a result of the name change.
The new system will launch in January 2024, with all residents charged $9.92 each month. Residents will then by offered an option sometime in mid-2024 to switch to a smaller garbage cart for a reduced rate. Ward 1 Coun. Darren Hill said he would have supported a system that charged households based on the weight of the garbage they put out for collection, but called the proposed model “an exercise in futility” that’s unlikely to divert the amount of waste from the landfill that city staff think it will.Article content
