Solon City Council has accepted the proposal of Mammoth Sports Construction for Phase 2 design, engineering and fundraising services for improvements at Solon Community Park – with the caveat that the “Cadillac” plan presented by Mammoth in July be substantially reduced.

David Devore, vice president of design for Mammoth Sports Construction, answers a question from Solon City Council Wednesday regarding Mammoth’s proposal for Phase 2 design, engineering and fundraising services for improvements at Solon Community Park.

“But given the cost of this and looking after the financial well-being of the city moving forward, I think we need to take at least 15 percent off what was presented .”“I think there are plenty of areas that we can focus on to bring that back to that 15 percent level,” he said. “However, some things in the plan, we probably don’t need,” he said. “We can actually pare it down and get the cost down if we approve this tonight, correct?”“We have proposed a design process that will allow us to design to a goal in terms of a budget that the city is comfortable with,” he said.

“Everything that’s , we need and we want,” he said. “We just need to pare it back and do it in phases to get it all constructed over a reasonable timeline so we’re not putting an undue onus on the finance department and also to satisfy what our neighbors want to get done,” he said. “I think what we’ve been able to do through this first phase of design was establish all of the dreams and all of the wants and needs for this project. That allows us to come back and understand where some of those limitations are at and make sure that we aren’t going ahead and making decisions that are going to adversely impact potential future things that we may want to add or phase in.

“But we need the design to know the budget, to then know what we want to approve or what we can approve.”“We’ll go through the design process, and we will have line items and costs associated with each amenity that we have,” he said. “Our whole design process is really about identifying priorities, but also then allowing us to make decisions based on what has been designed and what the costs are associated with that.
