Most experts agree that the CRA automatically filing your taxes for you is still years away, but this is a formal first step toward that

The objective is to help millions of Canadians — up to 12 per cent of the population, according to the budget — who currently don’t file their taxes do so. Since most of them are low-income individuals, the government says they are likely missing out of a host of benefits, such as the Canada Child Benefit and the Guaranteed Income Supplement.

For years, a growing number of experts have argued that it’s time the CRA begin looking at filing taxes for Canadians instead of asking taxpayers to do it themselves, as is done in Sweden, Denmark, Estonia and to a certain degree in the United Kingdom. “It’s really a step towards fundamental changes for Canadians. We have to do things differently and the best way possible, so that people receive the credits and benefits they’re entitled to and to ensure that people … pay their fair share” of taxes, Lebouthillier said.Article content

“As long as that’s still a major part of our system, automation is not practical for everybody,” Profit said in an interview. “There’s a lot of those things that our tax system is very much built on, and that has a profound effect on the ability to automate our tax filing process.”Article content
