A crocodile sighting near Yishun Dam has prompted a warning from the National Parks Board (NParks) for the public to avoid the area. The reptile is believed to be an estuarine (saltwater) crocodile, commonly found in brackish and freshwater areas.

A crocodile was spotted swimming close to the edge of a canal near Yishun Dam. The National Parks Board (NParks) issued a warning on Tuesday (Jan 7) for the public to stay clear of the waters at Yishun Dam. This advisory follows a video uploaded to the Sgfollowsall Instagram page on Monday showing a crocodile swimming along a canal near the dam. NParks' group director of wildlife management How Choon Beng confirmed they were alerted to the sighting on Monday.

He said they are monitoring the situation and have placed advisory signs around the area to warn the public to stay away from the water's edge. They have also shared advisories with kayaking operators and stakeholders to avoid the waters. The reptile is likely an estuarine (saltwater) crocodile which feeds and rests in brackish and freshwater areas. NParks said it is typically found in the waters or on mudflats in the Straits of Johor. This crocodile primarily hunts at night and usually consumes fish, but may also eat mammals, birds, and carrion. NParks advises the public to stay calm and back away if they encounter a crocodile. They should not approach, provoke or feed the animal. The public should also heed warning signs and advisory notices posted in areas where crocodiles have been sighted. A similar incident occurred last July when a man shared a video of a crocodile near Yishun Dam on Facebook. NParks had also put up advisory signs at the time. In October 2023, a nearly 3m-long crocodile was caught at East Coast Park after being spotted in the waters of Marina East beach
