A Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis athlete took home the class 4A individual state championship. Here’s how other local athletes performed in Round Rock, Texas.

The UIL Texas cross country state championships concluded in Round Rock, Texas. Class 5A, 3A and 1A competed on Friday and Class 6A, 4A and 2A competed on Saturday.Southlake Carroll won the class 6A state championship with sophomore Caden Leonard claiming the individual title with a time of 15:00.10. Teammate Blake Bullard finished shortly after, placing fourth and securing a time of 15:09.10.Southlake Carroll’s girls also shined, placing second overall as a team in class 6A.

Another Fort Worth-area squad that thrived was Trophy Club Byron Nelson. The Bobcats took fourth place as a team, barely missing the podium; Junior MJ Novelli paved the way, crossing the finish line at 12th.Senior Ethan Gonzalez from Richland high school won the Class 5A Boys state championship, posting a 14:55.80 5K time. He was the only athlete to come in at under 15 minutes and bested the second place finisher by 24 seconds.Argyle senior Tyler Westrom placed ninth with a time of 15:31.

Aledo’s Micah Neal came in two seconds behind her, placing seventh, and teammate Molly Garrison finished 12th. The Bearcats, as a team, podiumed with a second place finish. Natali Velasquez and Josie Osbourne of Colleyville Heritage placed 11th and 15th, respectively. The two strong performances powered the Panthers to a fourth place team finish.

Fellow Grapevine-Colleyville ISD school Grapevine finished close behind, posting a sixth place team finish.Senior Angel Sanchez of Fort Worth Diamond Hill Jarvis won the individual class 4A state title. He was dominant, crossing the finish line nine seconds before the second place finisher.Charles Baggarly is a high school sports editor and reporter for the Fort Worth Star Telegram.
