Daily ICU Admissions in the state turned negative for the first time.
Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a press conference on Friday that he was “cautiously optimistic” about New York’s slowing infection rate, citing a “dramatic decline” in new hospitalizations as the state’s intensive care units discharged more patients than they gained for the first time yesterday.
The total number of new hospitalizations in New York has continued to decline in recent days, with the actual curve coming in “much, much lower” than originally expected, Cuomo said on Friday. Social distancing and lockdown measures are starting to pay off, a promising trend which started earlier this week. “Overall, New York is flattening the curve,” the governor said.
Use of intensive care units actually fell yesterday, with more patients discharged than admitted: “It’s the first time we’ve seen a negative number, so that’s good,” Cuomo said. New York’s death toll also continued to rise, however, with another 777 lives lost as of Friday. In total, 7,844 New Yorkers have so far died because of coronavirus, Cuomo said. That’s how many cases have been confirmed in New York as of Friday, according to Johns Hopkins University. New York is the global epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, with more cases now reported in the state than any country in the world, overtaking the likes of Spain, Italy and France.
