Cyclist dies at hospital after IMPD officer strikes him in patrol vehicle

UPDATE | Unfortunately, the bicyclist struck by an IMPD officer yesterday has died. The investigation is ongoing.

According to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the crash occurred in the 3200 block of East 10th St. around 2:15 p.m.

According to police, an IMPD officer was responding to a domestic violence call and possible home invasion. Police said the officer activated his emergency lights and sirens and was approaching N. LaSalle Street when a vehicle in front of the officer attempted to start a left-hand turn as the officer was passing him on the left.

The office attempted to avoid a collision with the vehicle but as the officer came around the vehicle, he collided with an adult male riding his bicycle westbound.Per IMPD policy, and state law, the officer was also taken to a hospital for a blood draw.Anyone with information is asked to call. Sgt. Whitesell with the IMPD Crash Investigators office. Alternatively, anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 317-262-TIPS.
