Will Americans look at dollar stores the same way once they’ve been to a Daiso? Probably not
The chain, which already has a strong presence on the West Coast, is making a push into the New York metropolitan area, opening its second store in the region this weekend, in Edgewater, New Jersey.
When Daiso opened its first New York region store, in Flushing's Skyview Center mall in February, lines to get in the store stretched throughout the mall. Ai Le, who is Vietnamese and lives in New York, was at the center to go to the bookstore, when he saw Daiso was open. He said he and his family have been very excited about the Flushing store, and they expect to shop at the Edgewater store frequently.
At Daiso, a higher percentage of items are covered by the $1.99 base price than at the bigger dollar store chains, where it sometimes is hard to still find something for $1.
