Commentary: 'The fact is that no matter the obstacle, nonprofit service providers refuse to be deterred in our efforts to build better lives in our city.'

Human service providers are one of the greatest, most valued assets in Chicago.

The fact is that no matter the obstacle, nonprofit service providers refuse to be deterred in our efforts to build better lives in our city. We work tirelessly to get more direct support for struggling Chicago residents and do whatever possible to raise funds to support our team members on the front lines of this essential work by increasing their wages, health and wellness benefits; providing more paid days off; and offering additional educational and professional development opportunities.

Sadly, this ordinance does nothing of the sort. In fact, in the middle of early voting and just days before an election and weeks before the runoff, nonprofits that don’t have the advantage of making candidate endorsements or giving campaign contributions or paying for voter outreach, are looking down the barrel of an ordinance.

If we had been given the same seat at the table as the powerful special-interest groups that crafted this ordinance, we would have pleaded with them to understand what we really need to better serve our community. In short, fully support the lifesaving programs we provide; heighten investment for wage increases, benefits and inflation; and establish an equitable formula that funds the actual costs of living, doing business and making a positive, lasting difference.
