As Palestinian Americans, the fear that we could be reading our families’ names next among the dead is an alarm ringing in our ears.
Our new morning routine is sitting and scrolling social media accounts of citizen journalists and health workers in Gaza to get caught up on what happened over the past eight hours. Unimaginable scenes have now become familiar: men digging through the rubble for their families, a wounded survivor mourning the loss of an entire family, babies and children spilling out of ambulances shaking and screaming on stretchers — or worse, not screaming and in small body bags. They are all covered in dust.
My fellow Palestinian physicians in Gaza are operating on the emergency room floor, without anesthesia or morphine, by using the glow of iPhone lights. They are tending to full thickness burns we have never seen or learned about in medical school.
