FORMER Sen. Leila de Lima was held hostage by three inmates inside the custodial center of the Philippine National Police early Sunday.PNP chief Rodolfo Azurin Jr. said the incident occurred at 6:30 a.m.Azurin said a policeman who was bringing food for the inmates was stabbed and critically wounded.De Lima, who is in detention in connection with drug charges, was briefly taken hostage, the police official said. She was unhurt.Azurin said the three inmates attempted to escape but were shot dead.
Another police officer noticed the incident and issued a warning. However, the three continued to stab Agustin, forcing the police officer to shoot them.Sulayao ran to the cell of de Lima and held her hostage.More police officers responded and tried to negotiate with Sulayao but he resisted.The tactical response team saw an opportunity and shot him.PNP Public Information Office Chief Brig. Gen. Roderick Alba said that Azurin has ordered a thorough investigation of the incident.
