A deepfake video of Mark Zuckerberg praising Congress for its inaction on tech antitrust legislation is creating waves after its debut in an ad Tuesday.
“Well, that was a close one,” an actor dressed as the mustached Monopoly man says before morphing into Meta Platforms Inc. META, +0.63% Chief Executive Zuckerberg.
Activist group Demand Progress is behind the two-and-a-half minute spot following repeated attempts by consumer advocates urging the House and Senate to vote on a bill that would prevent Big Tech from giving its products preferential treatment over rivals and alleviate Alphabet Inc.’s GOOGL, -0.90% GOOG, -0.84% Google and Apple Inc.’s AAPL, -2.11% sway over app developers.
The ad concludes with this disclaimer: “The Zuck is fake, but the message is real.” It urges citizens to contact Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and demand a vote on legislation before the next session of Congress convenes in January.
