House Dems are demanding Mitch McConnell immediately return to Washington so the Senate can vote on gun control legislation
whether they should cut short their six-week recess and return to the Capitol to pass additional gun control legislation.
“I don’t know what additional bills we would pass. I think we’ve made the first step, we’ve passed good legislation,” Thompson said in an interview Monday, referring to the pair of background-check bills. “I think the Senate needs to do its job and pass the legislation.” “We should not wait until the district work period ends on September 9 to take action that will protect the American people,” according to the letter, which was signed by 48 Democrats and obtained by POLITICO.
"In the wake of the El Paso shootings, it is clear that terrorists motivated by a common white supremacist ideology are committing deadly attacks against African-American, Jewish, Muslim, Hispanic and other non-white communities in the United States," they wrote. The Democratic caucus is likely to take a multi-pronged approach to fighting gun violence and white supremacy -- dual threats that played a role in El Paso last weekend. Another recent mass shooting in Gilroy, Calif., is also under investigation as a possible act of domestic terrorism, the FBI announced Tuesday.
