As a senator, lawyer, and longtime member of the Senate’s Legal Committee, I’ve studied and debated assisted suicide legislation for years, from the Trudeau government’s initial bill in 2016 to their expansionist Bill C-7 last year. Shockingly, that bill even expanded assisted suicide to mental illness, which now will be allowed in March.

My volunteer mental health advocacy has focused on shattering the stigma around suicide, speaking to thousands of people across the country, doing local and national media interviews and raising $215,000 in funds to increase awareness for suicide prevention. I resent the implication that such efforts count for nothing.
