Scientists streamline a widely used chemical reaction, creating new manufacturing opportunities NatureSynthesis
Conventional Suzuki–Miyaura arylations use halogenated compounds as electrophilic coupling partners. Although the catalytic activation of organohalides is well established, these substrates are seldom naturally abundant and questions exist as to their metabolic and environmental friendliness. Owing to their existence as readily available chemical feedstocks, alcohols are highly desirable cross-coupling partners, although pathways to activate the strong C–O bond are rarer.
Here the coupling of tertiary alcohols with boronic esters through in situ alcohol silylation is described, providing access to quaternary carbon scaffolds without needing to proceed by an activated alkyl halide or pseudohalide intermediate. A dual catalyst system is used with both Ni and Bi components playing a critical role, along with a mild chlorosilane reactant.

Export of defensive glucosinolates is key for their accumulation in seeds - NatureArabidopsis thaliana UMAMIT uniporters facilitate glucosinolate efflux from biosynthetic cells along the electrochemical gradient into the apoplast, in which the high-affinity H+-coupled glucosinolate importers GLUCOSINOLATE TRANSPORTERS (GTRs) load them into the phloem for translocation to the seeds.

Long-range skin Josephson supercurrent across a van der Waals ferromagnet - Nature CommunicationsWhen entering a ferromagnet, a spin-singlet supercurrent decays rapidly, while a spin-triplet supercurrent can extend over much longer distances. Here, the authors observe long-range, spin triplet supercurrent in lateral Josephson junctions constructed using the van der Waals metallic ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2 as the weak link.
