The Bears shared a statement from Butkus’s family Thursday announcing that he died in his sleep at his home in Malibu, Calif.Playing with a ferocity notable even for the rugged NFL of the 1960s, Butkus quickly developed a larger-than-life persona as a force who careened from sideline to sideline in search of opponents to punish.
The third overall pick in the 1965 draft, Butkus played until 1973. He earned five first-team all-pro selections, eight Pro Bowl nods and finished in the top six in Associated Press voting for league MVP three times. After hanging up his cleats, he found work as an actor and pitchman.
