The Academy’s mixed messaging around the Oscar show’s abrupt altercation began after the telecast on Sunday, when the group’s Twitter account vaguely, “The Academy does not condone violence of any form,” before celebrating all of the night’s winners who “deserve this moment of recognition.” Of course, Smith accepted the best-actor Oscar less than an hour after his violent outburst, having not left or been removed from the show.
