DrainerBot appears to have been distributed via an infected software development kit . Legit software developers integrate these SDKs into their Android apps to make money by enabling in-app advertising. Unfortunately, this SDK was infected. In turn, hundreds of popular Android apps have been infected, according to Dan Fichter, chief technology officer and vice president of engineering at Oracle Data Cloud’s Moat Analytics.

Meanwhile, advertisers are paying for fake views that appear to be legitimate. Unless they have a service that effectively monitors ad traffic for SIVT, advertisers or ad agencies may be duped into thinking they're achieving prominent ad placements on sought-after publishers' sites and that their ads are being viewed by humans.

Publishers also should participate in the International Advertising Bureaus Ads.txt initiative to combat counterfeit inventory. Ads.text provides a mechanism for listing authorized digital sellers.
