NEW YORK – Disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, was found injured in his Manhattan jail cell and rushed to a local hospital, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday.
Multiple sources said Epstein may have tried to hang himself at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. But other possibilities were being investigated, including an attack by another inmate or simply an effort by Epstein to win transfer to another facility, they said. Lawyers for Epstein filed an appeal this week challenging a judge’s decision to keep him behind bars until his trial. Epstein had offered to post bail in excess of $100 million.
A federal indictment charged that Epstein"sexually exploited and abused dozens of minor girls at his homes" in Manhattan and Palm Beach, Florida, along with other locations.
