Disney+ has confirmed a hefty price hike for the streaming service alongside Hulu, less than one year after a previous bump up in pricing.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Disney+ and Hulu will soon be receiving hefty price hikes less than one year after their previous price bumps. In December 2022, Disney+ Premium increased its price to $10.99 per month following the service introducing an ad-supported tier. Disney indicated Disney+ would be hiking prices in May as Disney plans to merge the service with Hulu in a shared streaming app.
Now, Disney+ has confirmed that both their streaming service and Hulu will be receiving large price hikes on October 12. On that day, Disney+ and Hulu's ad-free plans will jump $3 each, with Disney+ now costing $13.99 per month and Hulu costing $17.99 per month. Two of Hulu's live TV packages will also be increasing in price, the ad-supported plan jumping to $76.99 per month while the ad-free plan including VOD will be $89.99 per month.
Why Streaming Service Changes Keep Happening In addition to the incoming price hikes, Disney+ and Hulu plan to crack down on password sharing in 2024. This follows in the footsteps of Netflix, who saw an increase of 5.9 million subscribers to the service after cracking down on password sharing. By eliminating password sharing themselves, Disney+ and Hulu likely hope to bolster the service despite falling subscriber numbers.
However, Disney+ and Hulu aren't the only streaming services to increase their prices or make radical changes to their platforms this year. HBO Max increased their ad-free tier price to $15.99 per month in January before rebranding to Max in May. Peacock increased their prices for the first time since launching in 2020 as well. Max, Paramount+, Disney+, and Hulu have all erased some original content over the last year as well, with some shows being pulled for cost-cutting reasons.
It appears Disney+ and Hulu's price changes - along with the many other changes streaming services have gone through this year - are being done to make their services more profitable. However, it remains to be seen how many customers will be willing to pay higher prices for both services. It won't be clear just how much Disney+ and Hulu's incoming price hikes help or harm the services until after they're implemented in October.
