Clive Campbell, better known to hip-hop historians as DJ Kool Herc, laid the foundation for hip hop, a musical genre that has ruled global pop culture for five decades, just by doing his job.

DJ Kool Herc attends The Source Magazine's 360 Icons Awards Dinner at the Red Rooster on August 16, 2019 in Harlem, New York City. DJ Kool Herc born Clive Campbell was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.CLEVELAND, Ohio - Clive Campbell, better known to hip-hop historians as DJ Kool Herc, has no classic, influential singles or albums or memorably innovative videos, or any recorded catalog to speak of.

Herc will be inducted into the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame this November in ceremonies at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. He will receive Rock Hall’s Musical Influence Award for artists whose music and performance style have directly influenced, inspired, and evolved rock and roll and music, impacting youth culture. The Jamaican native emigrated to the U.S. and began throwing block parties in his Bronx neighborhood in the 1970s, playing funk and soul records.

Herc also used his DJ skills to develop his “Merry-Go-Round” technique of using the two tables and two copies of a record to isolate and repeat funky instrumental drums. That allowed him to live loop with vinyl, stringing together breaks from funk songs such as Incredible Bongo Band’s version of “Apache,” and “Bongo Rock,” Jimmy Castor’s “It’s Just Begun,” and Babe Ruth’s “The Mexican” to create the “breakbeat.

In the summer of 1973 at 1520 Sedgewick Ave. Herc held a “Back To School Jam” party for his sister. That moment has been credited as a foundational event in the birth of hip hop. Herc’s fans and acolytes, including GrandMaster Flash, Grandmaster DXT and Afrika Bambaataa would take hip hop into the studio and on vinyl and spread the evolving music and the accompanying culture to the rest of America and eventually the world. But it was DJ Kool Herc who showed them the path.
