Genome-wide association study identifies bacterial SNPs associated with host body mass indexA new study has identified bacterial single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with host body mass index (BMI) through a metagenome-wide association study (MWAS). The study discovered 1,358 statistically significant associations between bacterial SNPs and BMI, with 40 independent associations. These associations were not explained by diet, medications, or physical exercise, and 17 of them replicated in a separate cohort. The study also revealed BMI-associated SNPs in 27 bacterial species, 12 of which were not detected by standard analysis methods.
