The first baseman was hurt playing for Team Canada on Tuesday and is back at Camelback Ranch for treatment
PHOENIX — Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman is done with the World Baseball Classic after suffering a hamstring injury while playing for Team Canada on Tuesday.
Team Canada confirmed Wednesday that Freeman had left the team and returned to the Dodgers’ training complex at Camelback Ranch for treatment. The Canadian team is scheduled to play Team Mexico on Wednesday afternoon with a berth in the quarterfinals at stake. Freeman left Tuesday’s game against Colombia after popping out in the third inning. He could be seen running cautiously to first base but stayed in the game to play defense for another half-inning before exiting with the hamstring injury.
Freeman was 2 for 10 with three runs scored in Team Canada’s first three games. An Orange County native, Freeman plays for Canada in the WBC as a tribute to his mother. Both of Freeman’s parents were born in Canada before moving to California. His mother, Rosemary, died of melanoma when Freeman was 10 years old.
